Meet Dr. Amy Reed

VIPcare has some truly amazing providers. They’re not just talented doctors but also caring individuals who genuinely strive to make a difference in their patients’ lives. Dr. Amy Reed from our Pensacola – Pine Forest primary care clinic is a true example of this.

“The best thing about medicine is being able to help people,” she said.

Dr. Reed is a former Naval physician and is board certified in family medicine.

Who is Dr. Amy Reed?

For Dr. Reed, medicine seemed like the obvious choice growing up. As a child, she was introduced to medicine as she watched her mother work through nursing school as a CNA at both a hospital and a nursing home just to pay the bills. She saw her mother’s sheer determination to graduate and be able to help others. But even though medicine caught her attention, it wasn’t Dr. Reed’s first choice.

“At first, I wanted to be a marine biologist,” she said. “Then, I wanted to go to NASA. I finally realized I wanted to do medicine, but as a veterinarian!”

However, after volunteering at two hospitals in high school combined with being exposed to the hospital and medicine with her mother, Dr. Reed decided medical school was in her future.

“I just saw how well [my mom] took care of her patients and how passionate she was,” Dr. Reed said. “On the outside looking in, I knew I wanted to take care of patients.”

Many of Dr. Reed’s family and friends tried to push her toward becoming a physician assistant (PA) or nurse practitioner (NP), but Dr. Reed knew she had it in her to go all the way and get that MD.

The Path to VIPcare

Dr. Reed attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and graduated with a BS in biological sciences and a BA in psychology. She earned a minor in Asian studies and even studied abroad for a year in Japan, where she got the opportunity to spend three weeks in China with her class following Kūkai’s journey; a Japanese monk who went to China to study and ended up introducing a new form of Buddhism to Japan: Shingon Buddhism.

She graduated from medical school at New York Medical School and completed her residency at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton while on active duty with the Navy. Her last duty station was Naval Hospital Pensacola, where she and her husband ended up liking it so much they decided to stay in the Florida panhandle. Following active duty, Dr. Reed joined the VIPcare family.

VIPcare has allowed Dr. Reed to practice medicine for all the reasons she went into medicine – to make a difference.

“We’re able to spend more time with our patients,” she explained about working for VIPcare. “We’re not seeing that volume, so we’re able to spend the time and get to know the patients and really make a difference.”

And Dr. Reed has and continues to do just that – make a difference.
