VIPcare continues to grow and add caring and compassionate providers to our team. Meet Dr. Gabriel Szmigiel, one of our newest providers. Dr. Szmigiel is a board-certified physician specializing in family medicine. He is currently the primary care provider at our new Riverview clinic.
Dr. Szmigiel brings over 16 years of experience to VIPcare and is excited to be establishing his family of patients in Hillsborough County.
Who is Dr. Gabriel Szmigiel?
Born in Poland, Dr. Szmigiel moved to the states when he was 13. It was this move that helped to spark his interest in medicine. His family moved to New Jersey to be close to an aunt who was ill and needed some medical care.
“I helped to manage her medications and monitor her diabetes,” he said. “She had episodes of hypoglycemia that were terrifying. This triggered my interest in understanding the cause, effect, and mechanism behind it and how it can be prevented and treated.”
Dr. Szmigiel’s interest in the human body led him to Rutgers University, where he earned his bachelor’s in biological sciences and his doctorate in medicine. He completed his residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerville, New Jersey. During his residency, he participated in a medical mission to Ecuador and Honduras called Hearts for Honduras.
“I decided to participate in these missions because I knew that they helped many people in need of medical care that had no other options otherwise,” he said.
Along with participating in mission trips, Dr. Szmigiel volunteered for six years at the Lloyd F. Moss free clinic in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
As a provider, he enjoys human interaction with his patients and strives to be empathetic with a sound approach. In addition, prevention and self-care through lifestyle changes are important to him and something he is excited to focus on at VIPcare.
“It allows the patient to be one step ahead of the problem, using fewer medications in the long term or possibly never having to use them,” he said. “I like the approach and structure of value-based medicine, and I feel that is how I was always practicing medical care for my patients.”
