We’d like to introduce you to Dr. Robert Hummer from our VIPcare Port Charlotte clinic. Dr. Hummer is an internal medicine specialist with over 28 years of experience. Each day he strives to provide each patient with the time and care they deserve.
Who is Dr. Robert Hummer?
Originally from Virginia, Dr. Hummer spent much of his childhood in the foothills of Georgia. He eventually moved back to Virginia, where he attended Virginia Tech, earning his bachelor’s degree in psychology. He then earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. However, his love for Georgia stayed strong, and he headed back south to complete his residency in internal medicine at Emory University in Atlanta.
Becoming a doctor made sense to Dr. Hummer, even at a young age. “My first thoughts about being a doctor were after having several injuries as a kid,” he said, “and having exposure to emergency room physicians and being fascinated and not afraid of what was going on.”
As he got older, Dr. Hummer realized he did okay in science and enjoyed volunteering to help people and take care of them. These traits only further pushed him toward a medical path.
“I joined a rescue squad in my college years, and that pretty much solidified it,” he recalled.
For 21 years, Dr. Hummer was a hospitalist for various medical centers and hospitals across Northeast Georgia. It was that experience that shaped him to be the primary care physician that he is today.
While working in the hospitals, he treated people with all types of ailments and from all walks of life. They were patients who didn’t know their primary care physician or couldn’t get an appointment for months.
“They started calling me their primary doctor, even as a hospitalist,” he said. “So, I decided that once I got to the other side, I would, as a primary care physician, try to make sure I was available for patients.”
And it was that admirable trait that led Dr. Hummer straight to VIPcare.
A Change in Climate
Dr. Hummer and his wife, Robyn, have six adult children. It was after their youngest son graduated high school and went off to college that they decided it was time for a change in climate.
His wife had been a traveling nurse and, years prior, had a travel assignment in Port Charlotte, FL. She instantly fell in love with the area, so when the opportunity presented itself, they moved further south into warmer temperatures.
“We like the area,” Dr. Hummer said about the mountains and Georgia, “but it still gets snow. We were ready to say goodbye to that.”
When they first moved to Florida, Dr. Hummer and his wife definitely experienced one of Florida’s most popular draws – boating. Only, their boat wasn’t for recreation; it was for residential purposes.
“When we first moved, we looked for a house and didn’t find exactly what we were looking for,” he said. “We were eating at a restaurant looking across the marina and saw a for sale sign on a 40-foot trawler. We both had the same idea.”
So, for 10 months, Dr. Hummer and Robyn lived on a boat before finally finding a house. Today, they still love “boating” and being on the water.
