We have a new clinic opening very soon in The Villages. It will be known as our VIPcare Fenney primary care clinic located at 3429 & 3431 Warm Springs Ave. Dr. Samuel Alfano will be the provider for that clinic.
Dr. Alfano specializes in internal medicine and has over 41 years of experience. He has been with VIPcare since last September after he and his wife retired to The Villages. Dr. Alfano has been assisting at our Spanish Plaines location and will soon make VIPcare Fenney his medical home. He is excited to begin establishing his new family of patients.
Who is Dr. Samuel Alfano?
Originally from Northeastern Pennsylvania in the Wilkes-Barre Scranton area, Dr. Alfano was introduced to the medical world early on. His mother was a nurse for over 45 years, and he has fond memories of friends and neighbors seeking out her expertise and compassionate patient care.
“She was very caring and accommodating to all and helped me to develop my love for patient care,” he said.
Medicine always seemed to be a part of his life, even after deciding to pursue a career in engineering and computer science. When Dr. Alfano was in high school, he had the opportunity to take a course and get trained as an EMT. This was encouraged and even arranged for him by his high school.
This training later helped to land him a job as an ambulance driver while studying in college.
“It was a perfect fit,” he said. “I was able to earn some extra money as well as utilize my training in basic life support. I owe my decision to become a doctor to one of the ER physicians who recognized that I had some talents and helped me to apply to medical school, and became a mentor during the early phase of my education.”
His Medical Journey
Dr. Alfano earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. He practiced internal medicine and geriatrics for Geisinger medical group in the area for almost 20 years. He then took a job with Catholic Health Initiatives seeing patients and running a medical group. During that time, he served as the Chief Medical Officer at a small community hospital in Reading, PA.
Because of his background in engineering and computer science, he decided to pursue clinical informatics, becoming one of the first physicians in the country to be board certified in the new specialty pertaining to medical records. He worked for several years as the National Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer for Catholic Health and Crozier Health System in Philadelphia.
After many years of hard work and lots of administrative duties, Dr. Alfano was ready to retire. That is from the administrative side of medicine, not patient care.
“The job with VIPcare has allowed me to continue to see patients and still enjoy a lifestyle here in The Villages that is great,” he said.
When he’s not in the clinic, you can find Dr. Alfano in the kitchen cooking up one of his mother’s old Italian recipes or enjoying a science fiction novel, as he likes to read one or two books a week.
