VIPcare has some exciting news coming out of Pasco County. We have added another primary care provider to our care team, Dr. Jason Waugh. We’re so happy to have Dr. Waugh join our Port Richey and Holiday clinic.
He brings over 16 years of experience practicing medicine and is a former United States Air Force staff physician.
Who is Dr. Jason Waugh?
Dr. Waugh made the decision to dedicate his life to medicine when he was just in elementary school.
“I considered my interests, skills, and the financial viability of several careers when I was in elementary school and decided upon medicine as the best fit, given my proclivities, interest in science and in people,” he said.” “I felt that I could have the greatest and most positive impact on the world by practicing medicine.”
Dr. Waugh enlisted and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1992. After enlisting, he trained as a laboratory technician setting the stage for medical school. However, medical school would have to wait for several years. Dr. Waugh served his time in the military and, in 2000, separated from the Air Force and began his journey to become a doctor.
Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Dr. Waugh returned to finish his prerequisites and attend medical school at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences. Upon earning his medical degree, he completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Tulsa Regional Medical Center.
During his residency, the Air Force reached out to Dr. Waugh and offered a stipend in return for his signing up again, which he did, rejoining active duty in 2009. He worked as a physician for the Air Force until 2021, when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and moved from Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA, to Florida.
Transitioning to the Private Sector
Dr. Waugh is so excited to be part of the VIPcare family. “VIPcare believes in the primary care model and enhances the physician’s ability to spend time with their patients, getting to know them, their quirks, their medical history, and educating them on health issues and healthy living,” he said.
He describes himself as a teacher when it comes to caring for his patients, and he is a firm believer that to get the greatest impact and best medical outcomes, you must head off health problems or diagnose them as early as possible. And this starts with educating the patients.
“Modern Western medicine requires patients to understand their disease process, treatment options, risks, and alternatives in order to make decisions about their health care,” he said. “However, they cannot do that unless they understand their disease process, what constitutes health, and understand their treatment options and limitations of what can be done. This requires the patient to be educated and invested in their care plan.”
