How To Get the Most Out of Your Doctor’s Visit

It’s not uncommon for older adults to leave their doctor’s appointments scratching their heads. Medical jargon and conditions can be confusing. But it’s important, however, that you leave your appointment with a good understanding of what exactly is going on with your health and any specific medical needs you may require. This helps to prevent and reduce medical errors and improve your quality of life.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your doctor’s visit and keep you from leaving frustrated and confused.

1. Prepare for Your Appointments

There’s more to scheduling a doctor’s appointment than just remembering to show up. It’s important to plan for your visit. You should always bring a list of your current medications, vitamins, supplements, and over-the-counter medications.

It’s also a good idea to write down any problems or items you want to discuss with your provider ahead of time. It can be easy to get distracted and forget to bring things up during your visit. Prepared items will help keep you on track.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

If your doctor says something you don’t understand, speak up and ask questions. Don’t be embarrassed. You’re not expected to understand all things medical; that’s why you have a doctor. Ask questions about new medications prescribed or new treatment methods and therapy. Getting answers to your questions or concerns can prevent small issues from becoming major complications.

If you have questions for your doctor before your appointment, write them down and bring them with you, so you don’t forget.

3. Take Notes

During your visit, you’re probably going to be given a lot of information to remember. Write it down! Don’t wait until you get home and try to remember all that was said. Be proactive and take notes while discussing matters with your doctor. This way, when you get home, you aren’t trying to remember any orders your doctor gave you or what the name of your health condition is.

4. Be Honest With Your Doctor

Even if you’re embarrassed or afraid, being completely honest with your doctor is so incredibly important. Your doctor diagnoses and treats you based on the information you provide them. And they can only suggest the best treatment if they really know what’s going on. So if you’re having a side effect from treatment, let them know. Even if you think it’s something minor, tell them.
