Primary care providers play a vital role in their patients’ lives. They are not just doctors; they are health advocates, listeners, confidantes, teachers, and counselors. Dr. Roy G. Bassett is the epitome of all these things. Many of you first met him when he was filling in at our Merritt Island primary care clinic. He is now full-time in Palm Beach County at VIPcare Boynton Beach.
Dr. Bassett has a pretty impressive background. He has done and accomplished more than most people do in a lifetime. He is a board-certified physician specializing in family medicine and general dentistry.
Who is Dr. Roy G. Bassett?
Originally from Mississippi and Louisiana, Dr. Bassett migrated to Florida to serve his residency in family medicine at Florida Hospital in Orlando. He loved the Florida climate so much that he stayed and built his career.
Dr. Bassett earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry and agriculture from Mississippi State University. He then relocated to Louisiana and attended Louisiana State University for medical and dental school.
“I wanted to become a doctor because I was always interested in mind, body, and spirit, and medicine allowed me to be able to study all those areas and help people,” he said. “It’s a difficult job; it’s very time-consuming, but it’s very worthwhile to be able to help people with their lives and where they’re at.”
Dr. Bassett began his career as an oral surgeon in a mash unit for the U.S. Army during the first desert storm. He then became a flight surgeon and paratrooper, where he practiced trauma and emergency medicine.
“I spent most of my career in military special operations and in aviation,” he said. “The military provided me a great experience in education that I would not have had otherwise.”
During his time in the military, Dr. Bassett received numerous awards as well as local community awards, including Doctor of the Year from the Florida Board of Medicine. He currently serves as the State Surgeon for the Florida Army National Guard.
Dr. Bassett has also spent time during his career as a flight surgeon for NASA and a professor where he lectured and taught classes at universities all over the world. He believes in setting a good example for his patients and treating everyone like they’re important, no matter where they are from and where they are at in their lives.
“None of us are perfect,” he said. “I practice what I preach. I exercise, I eat the best that I can.”
