We have two new locations and a new provider to introduce you to. Meet Dr. Silvia Abreu Read. Dr. Read is an internal medicine specialist with over 24 years of experience. She is the primary care provider at our two new Jacksonville locations – Gate Parkway and Baymeadows.

Who is Dr. Silvia Read?
Originally from the Dominican Republic, Dr. Read committed to studying medicine at just nine years old.
“I knew I wanted to become a doctor since I was a very young child suffering with ear infections,” she said. “I felt relief when I saw my pediatrician…I wanted to be that source of relief and hope for others when I grew up.”
Dr. Read earned her medical degree from Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, before heading off to the States to complete her residency in internal medicine at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.
During her last year of residency, Dr. Read developed an interest in diabetes care. This led her to complete a rotation in endocrinology.
“A patient came to the clinic with a glucose log and asked me for advice on adjusting insulin,” she said. “I was not able to help her then; I realized I needed more training in managing this very common disease.”
She enjoyed learning how complex diabetes could be and how it impacts the whole body. “…my mentor taught me to care for patients with diabetes as a whole person, including the psychosocial aspects that impact the disease,” she said.
Because she wanted to make the biggest impact on patients’ lives, Dr. Read chose to practice primary care. Throughout her career, she has practiced in various medical settings. But she is happy to now call VIPcare home.
“I saw the job description for this position and thought it would be a great fit for me,” she said. “Now, after my orientation, I realized that is a better fit than I thought. The attention to disease and the importance of spending time with patients confirm that I am at the right place.”
