Meet Dr. Jim Wilson

Meet Dr. Jim Wilson

We introduced you to Dr. Jim Wilson last November. He had recently joined our VIPcare family and was taking over as our primary care provider in Merritt Island.

Originally from New York, Dr. Wilson came to VIPcare with much experience. He is compassionate, caring, and dedicated to helping his patients achieve Better Health.

Dr. Wilson is a family medicine specialist with over 28 years of experience and is a two-time recipient of the Alice Freuhan M.D. award for his dedication and commitment to the students of Albany Medical College.

Who is Dr. Jim Wilson?

Dr. Wilson was born and raised and mostly schooled in New York. He attended The College of Saint Rose in Albany for his undergraduate and then Albany Medical College for his doctorate. Then, he left the state for a three-year Family Medicine residency in Middletown, Connecticut, only to return to Albany to begin his medical career.

It was in upstate New York where Dr. Wilson spent most of his life. That was until last June when he and his family decided to become Florida residents.

“I wanted to move to Florida for a better job, weather, and lifestyle opportunities and quality of life/educational opportunities for my children,” he said.

Dr. Wilson always wanted to help people, which sounds like a natural fit for someone who wants to be a doctor. However, medicine wasn’t always his primary interest. Being an outdoorsman, he previously explored photography, scuba diving (industrial and recreational), and even environmental toxicology. But he was intrigued by medicine in college, which ultimately won out.

“I had an internship in a tissue typing lab that performed the testing needed for kidney transplantation,” he said. “I was hired prior to graduation to do tissue typing by the transplant surgeon who operated the lab. This led to an interest in medicine.”

From there, medicine became his passion. And he became the teaching doctor that he is today.

“I try to explain things to the patient in a way they understand what I understand,” he said. “It’s their illness/condition, they need to understand it as best as they can to better empower them to manage it.”

Why Family Medicine

When trying to decide which field of medicine to go into, Family Medicine just seemed to make the most sense for Dr. Wilson. “I’m not sure I can narrow down a single most enjoyable area of medicine…. this is a big reason why I went into Family medicine; I need variety,” he explained.

This need for variety also led him toward a practice focused on primary care.

“I do find a great deal of satisfaction with treating sick children,” he said. “To get a big smile and a hug after fixing an ear infection or removing a splinter from a previously scared, in pain child is a wonderful thing … Cutting toenails is another source of satisfaction…not the most glamorous procedure, but the appreciation from a patient who can no longer do this themselves is genuine.”

Dr. Wilson has shifted his primary care focus toward the aging population, with a goal to do what’s right for his patients and help them find care management plans for their individual needs.
